Tuition Hike Proposed For State Colleges in RI

The state Board of Higher Education plans to recommend a tuition increase for the fall of 2012 at Rhode Island's three public colleges.

Residents would pay 9.5 percent more at the University of Rhode Island, an additional 4 percent at Rhode Island College and 7.5 percent at the Community College of Rhode Island.

The increase would come after tuition at the schools has already increased by as much as 47 percent over the past five years. Over the same time period, state funding for higher education has dropped by 30 percent.
