Trinity University president prepares to leave post

As the bells of Murchison Tower marked the quarter-hours across Trinity University's red-brick campus last week, President Dennis Ahlburg reflected on his decision to step down when his five-year term ends in January.

Casting himself as a change agent, Ahlburg, 63, said the choice he made was “Darryl Byrd's fault, if there is any fault,” citing a conversation he had when his friend Byrd stepped down as CEO of the Pearl Brewery development in 2011 and became president and CEO of the nonprofit SA2020.

Ahlburg recalled Byrd telling him, “There are those that love to lead change and there are those that love to manage. ... You've got to figure out which one you are.”
