Times Watchdog: What Does Drake State's Pursuit Of Community College Status Mean For Calhoun?

Higher education in Huntsville faces a shifting landscape that could lead to several more changes, and possible conflicts, in the near future.

Drake State Technical College, now armed with accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, intends to seek full community college status.

"From our perspective, it is important for us to have that designation," Drake State President Helen McAlpine said this week.

To be classified as a community college would raise Drake State's profile in North Alabama in a way even the SACS accreditation would not do. Drake State would have the same designation as other area community colleges, such as Calhoun, Northwest Shoals and Wallace State in Hanceville.
