About 1,000 students rallied and marched from the UC Berkeley campus to a downtown Bank of America branch as part of a statewide day of action to bring attention to higher-education cuts they say were caused by banks.

Police diverted traffic off Telegraph Avenue for the march to the bank a few blocks away from campus, where students gathered and blocked the entrance, chanting "We got sold out."

The protesters then headed back to campus and for a general assembly meeting -- like their counterparts in Occupy movements elsewhere. The crowd has thinned to a few hundred since the protest began at noon.

There are no signs of tents and UC officials have put the protesters on notice that they won't allow an encampment at the site.
