Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne retired during an emotional news conference Tuesday at Kyle Field.
While Byrne said that he was ready to retire, he said that he had been only a good solider while the athletic department has undergone major transitions, including an ongoing move to the SEC. A&M also made a coaching change in football.
"You're taught to salute and carry on and that's what we'll do," Byrne said.
Byrne immediately assumes the role of special advisor to the president until his retirement becomes effective August 31. Byrne will receive payment for the sum of his contract, which runs through August 2013.
