Teaching Assistants Share Woes With Western Michigan University Board Of Trustees

Western Michigan University Board of Trustees received a briefing on the university’s veteran-friendly track record, met the new Western Student Association President and listened to teaching assistant woes at a board meeting on Thursday, April 19.

Trustees also approved raising room and board rates 2 percent for incoming students, but current students residing in dorms are protected from raising rent fees thanks to a 2007 program that locks rates for four years.

Three members from the Western Michigan University Teaching Assistants Union voiced concerns about low wages to the Board of Trustees at their meeting on Thursday.

After comparing pay with other universities, listing various living costs and sharing statistics, TAU President Daniel Maitland, 26, asked trustees to consider altering teaching assistant salary rates so working and paying off loans is affordable.
