SUNY Students Statewide Protesting Cuts In College Funding

Students at various State University of New York campuses across the state are expected to hold rallies and teach-ins this afternoon to protest state cuts to higher education.

“Wall Street gets bailed out and students get tuition increases,” said Jackie Hayes, a State University at Albany graduate student who helped organize the protests.

New York Students Rising, which was established this past summer, planned today’s protests, which were publicized by The Occupied Wall Street Journal, the newspaper of the protesters who have been gathering on Wall Street in recent weeks.

They are trying to focus public attention on what they say is the special treatment corporations have received during the financial crisis.
