Two Central College students have reached a private settlement in the case of an alleged rape investigated by the Reader's Watchdog this spring.
Peter Berger, a lawyer for the male student accused in the case, said the resolution resulted in dismissals of appeals at the Pella school. Central's Sexual Misconduct Hearing Committee had recommended a resolution that would have allowed the perpetrator to choose his punishment, a move that was controversial and triggered headlines beyond Iowa.
The woman in the case said she believed the school's initial response violated Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination and requires schools to promptly investigate allegations of sexual assault. The man insisted the two had consensual sex.
