State Rep. Reggie Meeks said Tuesday he is being laid off by the University of Louisville.

A university spokeswoman said that Meeks is one of fewer than two-dozen employees who are being let go in an effort to cut costs before the start of the 2012-13 fiscal year, which begins Sunday.

“It is important to note that U of L is not mandating layoffs but has instead asked its deans and department heads to seek cost-cutting measures that are most appropriate for their units,” spokeswoman Cindy Hess said.

She said the deans and department heads have up to a year to implement layoffs and other cuts in an effort to deal with a $49.7 million hole in the school’s budget brought on by a 6.4 percent reduction in state funds next year mandated by the Kentucky General Assembly.
