St. Peter's College In Jersey City Applies To The State For Right To Call Itself A University

After 140 years of higher education, St. Peter’s College in Jersey City has applied to the state to be considered a “university.”

“We have applied for university status and we are waiting with baited breath,” Eugene J. Cornacchia, president of the Jesuit college, said last week.

“We already offer doctorates and masters degrees and since we have all the characteristics of a university, why don’t we get the benefit from the name?”

Cornacchia said he expects to get a decision from the state Commission for Higher Education on the application in the next couple of months.
