Using his sick days sparingly turned out to be a big payoff for Grand Rapids Community College instructor Thomas Worthington.
During the more than four decades he spent teaching math and physics at the college, he rarely called in sick – dedication that earned him the respect of colleagues and students alike.
By the time he retired last July, he says he had accumulated nearly 400 unused sick days. With the college’s practice of paying full-time faculty about $50 for each unused day, Worthington, 69, walked away with $20,374.
“My wife says I come from good genes,” the Grand Rapids Township resident joked. “I really don’t get sick that often. Still don’t.”
