A security breach in a computer at Central Connecticut State University has exposed not only the Social Security numbers of thousands of students, alumni, and current and former employees, but also their names.
Mark McLaughlin, spokesman for the university, said Wednesday that university officials thought at first that only the 18,275 Social Security numbers were exposed to potential risk and misuse, with no link to names. But they learned last week that the breach also included an undetermined number of names.
McLaughlin said that while he learned last week that names had been exposed, he didn't get to posting that information on a "frequently asked questions" web page regarding the security breach until this week.
"That was my mistake," he said about the delay.
