The Birmingham Area Consortium for Higher Education will use a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to begin a new initiative to promote student safety on area campus.
Samford University received $499,551 and will spearhead the "Safety in Numbers" project that focuses on the safety of women on campuses at all BACHE member schools, which also include Birmingham-Southern College, Miles College, University of Montevallo and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The grant was highly competitive, according to U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus.
"These schools had to come together," he said. "They had to prove that they have an understanding and a road map for how to make campuses safer for young women, and in doing so, young men."
