Rutgers University's Board of Governors on Wednesday approved a 2.2 percent increase in tuition, fees and room and board charges for in-state undergraduates. It also approved increases in out-of-state tuition.

In-state tuition will rise from $10,104 to $10,356 this fall, while out-of-state tuition will rise from $22,766 to $23,676. Students in some schools, though, will pay more.

Student fees will rise from $2,651 to $2,717, and average room and board costs will rise from $10,764 to $10,970.

The vote came after several students told the board they are already struggling to pay tuition and other fees. They had urged the board to impose a tuition freeze instead of an increase.
