R.I. colleges, universities collaborate to boost state's economy

A research consortium of the state’s 11 colleges and universities is ready to help state policymakers grapple with the complexities of economic development. The College & University Research Collaborative was formed in response to frustrations Rhode Islanders voiced that the state was saddled with high unemployment and no clear strategy for reviving its economy.

In State House hearings, organizational meetings and other forums, Rhode Islanders worried aloud that laws and policy decisions for too long were put into place without the information or data needed to understand their ramifications.

The research-collaborative idea surfaced as a key proposal at the Rhode Island Foundation’s 2012 “Make It Happen” event, a public meeting of 300 people the philanthropic organization invited to the Rhode Island Convention Center to brainstorm about economic development.
