When it comes to higher education, the name "regent" is taken. Trademarked, actually.
That was the message Regent University imparted to the board of the University System of Georgia, which is merging two universities and has proposed calling the resulting school "Georgia Regents University."
In a letter to the Georgia system’s board of regents, a Regent University attorney wrote using the word could create confusion and lead people to think the Georgia and Virginia institutions are related. He added it would “dilute Regent University’s trademarks.”
