Records Show Mix-Up In University of Iowa Theft Case

Weeks before a University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics employee was charged with embezzling $12,000, a university official told her lawyer the school had "no plans" to pursue a criminal case if she repaid the money.

Records released Tuesday to The Associated Press show Debra Suchomel used her credit card to pay for personal expenses such as groceries, sporting goods equipment and restaurant and casino bills during a work trip to Las Vegas.

Defense attorney Davis Foster said she would plead not guilty to credit card fraud. He is looking into whether statements by Deputy General Counsel Jamie Jorgensen that UI police didn't plan to pursue the case should be binding.
