Purdue University is warning more than 7,000 former students that their Social Security numbers may have been accessed last year during a computer breach.
Purdue said Monday that a computer server containing old course records from 2000 through mid-2005 was broken into on April 5, 2010.
The Lafayette Journal and Courier reported that there's no evidence files were accessed. Instead, a review found the breach might have been part of an attempt to use the computer system to launch attacks against other servers.
Purdue sent letters Monday to 7,093 former students warning them that their Social Security numbers might have been accessed in the breach.
