Gov. Rick Perry today is expected to encourage state colleges and universities to consider incorporating a competency-based model into their academic offerings.
Sources close to the governor’s office tell me that he’s been pleased with that approach, a hallmark of Western Governors University, a private, nonprofit online institution with a Texas branch, WGU Texas.
It’s an approach that Perry apparently feels can help schools boost graduation rates and, by speeding up the path to a degree, save money for students and their families.
Perry is expected to address the matter in Austin this morning at a conference sponsored by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
