Pennsylvania universities step up recruitment strategies

Pennsylvania state universities have employed sophisticated recruitment strategies seen more frequently at private colleges and universities as they battle declining enrollments.

Enrollment in the 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education declined 6 percent from a high of 119,513 since 2010, as the number of high school graduates began to fall.

“With 90 percent of our students coming from Pennsylvania and 85 percent being traditional students, obviously, the number of high school graduates impacts us more,” said Karen Ball, vice chancellor for external relations at the State System.
