Out-Of-State Students Keep UW System Enrollment Level

Lower birthrates are driving down the number of prospective college students in Wisconsin, but because several campuses in the University of Wisconsin System are luring more freshmen from other states, total enrollment is holding steady.

For now.

Some UW officials fear more than demographics could be behind a looming loss of Wisconsin students at some UW campuses. They fear UW has been priced out of the market in a lagging economy.

"There's been a lot of things changing in the economy, a lot of things changing in financial aid, that have had an impact on our students," conceded Mark Nook, the UW System's senior vice president for academic and student affairs.
