Since a September court decision, students and faculty with concealed weapons permits can legally pack guns on Oregon's seven university campuses, but that may end on Friday.

The State Board of Higher Education will consider a policy that would require people to agree not to carry guns if they want to do any business on university property, whether as a student, professor, employee, contractor, vendor, sports fan or visitor to any university event.

"There is strong support for this policy on the board," said board member Jim Francesconi. "We believe this complies with the court decision."

The policy provides a more cumbersome replacement to the gun ban previously established by the board through an administrative rule, which was struck down last fall by the Oregon Court of Appeals. The court ruled only the Legislature had authority to regulate guns.
