Oregon Senate approves study of free community college for high school grads

Lawmakers took the first step toward providing two free years of community college to all Oregon high school graduates Thursday.

Senate Bill 1524 passed the Oregon Senate unanimously. It would call on the Higher Education Coordinating Committee to study the concept and report back later this year, potentially setting up the issue for the 2015 Legislature.

Sen. Mark Hass, D-Beaverton, told his colleagues that the bill would provide the state with the due diligence needed to fully vet the idea in the next legislative session.
