President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will host a White House summit Thursday on expanding college opportunities.
Leaders from colleges, nonprofit organizations, foundations, state governments and businesses also have been invited to share ideas on increasing opportunities for low-income and disadvantaged students at the daylong summit. According to the Washington Post, more than 100 college and university presidents are expected to attend.
The president has expressed concern that the cost of higher education has become unrealistic for too many families, placing unbearable debt burdens on students. He has proposed rewarding schools that hold down costs and that make sure that more poor students complete their education.
