Northwestern appeals union ruling

Northwestern University on Wednesday formally appealed the ruling that classified its scholarship football players as employees and cleared the way for them to form a union.

The university said the regional director of the National Labor Relations Board mischaracterized, slanted and ignored relevant facts when ruling that the school’s football players are employees of the university.

"The regional director ignored the evidence of Northwestern’s primary commitment to the education of all of its student-athletes, evidence that fully supports that its student-athletes are primarily students, and not employees," Northwestern wrote in its appeal to the NLRB in Washington, which was filed on Wednesday afternoon.
