New tribal college hopes to provide labor for Bakken fields

Freshly painted and carpeted rooms were filled with the sounds of beating drums Wednesday as an honor song welcomed the arrival of a new tribal college to Rapid City that could provide much needed skilled labor for places like the Bakken oil fields.

The opening of a new branch of United Tribal Technical College at the old National American University building on Kansas Street could be a pipeline for jobs to the Bakken oil fields, said Tex Hall, chairman of the UTTC board.

Hall said Wednesday that two-thirds of the wells are on tribal lands, and they hope to fill the need that companies directly and indirectly involved in the oil industry have for employees.

"We have the jobs, just not the work force," Hall said.
