New rules allow Florida freshmen final say on remedial classes

College freshmen — not test scores or advisers — soon will have the final say in whether students need academic help.

Starting next fall, remedial classes will be optional for most incoming students at Florida’s 28 community and state colleges. Also optional is a placement test that identifies whether students are ready for college.

Campus leaders are wary of the change.

“If they walk in off the streets with a high school diploma and say ‘I’m ready for college algebra’... we’ll see,” said Jeff Allbritten, president of Edison State College.
