National Association Criticizes U of Northern Iowa Over Program, Staff Cuts

Administrators at the University of Northern Iowa violated governance, academic freedom and tenure procedures when they eliminated certain programs and closed the education training school, according to a national professors group that reviewed the recent cuts.

The American Association of University Professors said in a report that UNI officials failed to follow the appropriate policies when determining which programs to eliminate.

The report also said the university had no legitimate basis to terminate faculty assigned to the programs that were eliminated or restructured.

UNI President Ben Allen disagreed with the report and said Friday that it was an attempt to intimidate the university because any action by the association — in this case, a vote to impose formal censure on the university — won’t be announced until after the new year.
