MSU Raises Tuition 3.5% For 2012-13, Drops Health Insurance Mandate

Michigan State University is increasing tuition next year by $420 for the typical full-time in-state student and dropping its student health insurance mandate under political pressure from the Legislature.

The MSU Board of Trustees on Friday approved a $1.1 billion 2012-13 operating budget that includes 3.5 percent tuition increase for undergraduates.

Trustee Diann Woodard cast the lone "no" vote against the plan.

"I just, in my heart of hearts, can't vote for another (tuition) increase," she said.
