When Mount Mary College marks its 100th anniversary in fall 2013, it will officially change its name to Mount Mary University.
The name change, unanimously approved Friday by the Mount Mary Board of Trustees, will better reflect "who we are," said Eileen Schwalbach, president of the private Catholic school in Milwaukee.
Thirty percent of Mount Mary's 1,856 students are in graduate programs, she said. When the school recently established its first doctoral program in art therapy, faculty raised the issue of whether a name change was in order. Surveys and focus groups reinforced that it was a good idea, Schwalbach said.
Mount Mary is the most recent private school in the Milwaukee area to change its name from college to university. Carroll in Waukesha, Cardinal Stritch in Fox Point and Concordia in Mequon all have changed their names within the past several years.
