Michigan aims to expand higher education for inmates

Quantrez Sawyer was a security officer in Detroit three years ago, but he wasn't earning enough to live outside his mother's house and support his three children. So he robbed a suburban McDonald's and is now serving a five-year sentence at the Macomb Correctional Facility.

Sawyer, who will be released in 2015, began taking a new entrepreneurship class at the prison, aimed at helping inmates learn the skills needed to launch a business upon release, improve their earnings and reduce their chances of landing behind bars again.

He hopes the class will help him develop a business plan so he can start a print shop and tattoo parlor.
