Higher education officials on Friday will vote on one choice -- Michael R. Gottfredson, provost of the University of California, Irvine -- to be the next University of Oregon president replacing ousted Richard Lariviere.
The 22-member UO search committee provided three finalists, said George Pernsteiner, chancellor of the Oregon University System, but "I thought, 'let's go with the one the committee and I both thought was the best candidate.'"
Gottfredson, who was not available Monday, has raised the academic profile of UC Irvine and helped dramatically expand its faculty and programs and will be a good fit for the UO, Pernsteiner said.
"He is known as being thoughtful, a listener, a collaborator, but someone who is able to make decisions and will stand for his principles," Pernsteiner said.
