Although Western Michigan University will have a new surface at Kanley Track this fall, don't expect a men's track team to trek it.
Advocates pushing to bring back Western Michigan University’s defunct men’s outdoor and indoor track, field and cross country programs will have to keep on waiting, said university trustees.
“The resources required to fulfill bringing back track, field and cross country were substantial and significantly beyond our reach,” said WMU Board Chair William D. Johnston at Thursday's board meeting. “We are not in opposition of a great historically significant tradition. Although we wish we had more money to allocate to the intercollegiate sports budget, we simply don’t.”
The programs were cut in 2003 and fans and alumni of the track teams have been asking for them back every since.
