Medical college presidents urged to embrace changes in healthcare

At a gathering of the Association of American Medical Colleges in Philadelphia this week, its President and CEO Dr. Darrell G. Kirch urged the group to embrace responsibility for transforming the health care system.

More than 4,500 members of AAMC are attending the organization's 124th annual meeting in the city from Nov. 1 - Nov. 6.

The choices medical schools and teaching hospitals make — or don't make — during the ongoing implementation of the country's health-care reform law will shape "not only our personal futures and the future of our organizations, but even the future of our nation," said Kirch. The AAMC represents 141 accredited U.S. and 17 accredited Canadian medical schools, just under 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems and about 90 academic and scientific societies.
