Local small colleges use athletics to entice students, up enrollment

Like many small colleges across the country, Louisiana College and Louisiana State University at Alexandria are trying to be creative in attracting more students to their campus.

A growing trend across the country shows those colleges using athletics as a way to entice students — both athletes and non-athletes who are attracted to a college with a thriving athletics department.

Louisiana College’s athletics department has existed for more than a century, and President Joe Aguillard credits the college’s decision to revive its dormant football program in 2000 — after not having a team for 32 years — as playing a key role in the college’s enrollment shift over the past decade.
