Local community colleges work on retention

With a national retention push under way, regional community colleges are looking at ways to increase retention and graduation rates with the goal of producing higher-achieving graduates.

“The pickle that we have is that we sit six miles from a major university (in SIU),” said Steve O’Keefe, director of college relations for John A. Logan College in Carterville. “We’re going to have people come here and take a class or two.

“We put in a new process last year of completely rewriting our recruiting and retention plans to break those people out of our data.”
