Likely Wayne State (Mich.) president has skills to boost university

Dr. M. Roy Wilson, the expected next president of Wayne State University, will pick up the reins as the university approaches a pivotal time in its 145-year history.

One of Michigan's three largest universities and the only urban research university, Wayne State is in the heart of Midtown Detroit, which is attracting more housing and businesses, including a Whole Foods grocery that opens this month.

Yet some observers say the intellectual center of the community can play a stronger role in Midtown. Although WSU has invested in housing and other projects, some hope Wilson will work with philanthropical and other institutions to drive more economic growth.
