Legislator Wants UW-Green Bay Chancellor, Aide Out

A legislator is calling for the firing of University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Chancellor Tom Harden and special assistant Dan Spielmann over the retirement and rehiring of Vice Chancellor Tom Maki.

State Rep. Steve Nass (R-Whitewater), chairman of the Assembly Colleges and Universities Committee, said in a statement Monday that "it is time to clean house and remove administrators at UW-Green Bay and throughout the UW System that don't believe the laws and rules apply to them."

Nass called for Harden and Spielmann to be fired because the state Department of Employee Trust Funds concluded last week that the circumstances surrounding the retirement and rehiring of Maki did not conform to state policy or the federal Internal Revenue Service code regulating pensions.

The Employee Trust Funds investigation found that key UW-Green Bay officials were involved in orchestrating the rehiring of Maki before his official retirement, Nass said in his statement Monday.
