Kalamazoo Valley Community College is implementing new campus safety measures after appointing new leadership to its public safety department and purchasing a new emergency phone system.
KVCC Board of Trustees appointed Richard Ives as the Director of Public Safety and Mark Sheffer as the department’s captain this month. The leadership changes come after Kenneth Colby, who helped create the three-year-old department, resigned in September.
Ives was previously the department’s captain and served as Director of the Police Academy. He also worked for the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety for 25 years. Sheffer was previously an officer at KVCC and a lieutenant for the KDPS.
The college is also purchasing 150 emergency telephones for classrooms in the Texas Township and Arcadia Commons campuses and rooms in the Dale B. Lake Auditorium for $78,200.
