Johnson County Community College opens new culinary academy

"How many chefs does it take to unload a pallet?" Jerry Marcellus jokes as he slits the tape on yet another cardboard box, unsheaths a gleaming new saucepan from its plastic sleeve and adds it to the growing stacks of kitchen equipment.

The academy building expands the award-winning program's classroom space from 11,000 square feet to 36,000 square feet. The five new culinary labs cook with gas — the industry standard — instead of electricity, and each supports sophisticated audio-visual technology.
