Colleges and universities are required to do eight fire drills and two tornado drills each year. JCC met the requirement for tornado drills for the traditional 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years on its main Summit Township but only completed six fire drills each year.
However, JCC only did the drills in its dormitories, not its classrooms or cafeteria or other academic buildings, which the law requires.
Cindy Allen, vice president of administration, said JCC was unaware of the requirement and will correct that going forward.
“We are working on an annual calendar with our security service ArmorKnight to make sure we are doing everything required,” Allen said. “We’re trying to be prepared for everything that may arise on campus. We take the safety and security of our students and employees very seriously.”
