Next semester, Ivy Tech Community College plans to raise tuition by the cost of a burger. That $5 increase isn’t what worries 21-year-old student Toheeb Badmus. What worries Badmus is that the semester after that, Ivy Tech wants another burger.
“The next year, and the year after, it’s going to be more and more,” he said. But other bites could have an even bigger impact on students.
Behind Ivy Tech’s proposed tuition increases lies a $68 million dilemma that has been put off for years — a deficit that $5 more each semester for the next two years will hardly begin to cover.
So in addition to higher tuition, Ivy Tech is pondering closing about a quarter of its sites around the state. Both moves will be considered this week by the school’s trustees.
