IUPUI Hotel/Conference Center To Be Converted Into Dorms, Classrooms

The University Place Conference Center and Hotel will be transformed into a multiuse IUPUI campus facility to provide student housing, dining facilities and classroom space, campus leadership announced Friday.

Officials of Indiana University, which owns the complex, blamed the weak economy for financial losses over several years in the operation of the conference center and hotel.

The conversion will begin in December, with classroom space available for use in January and residential occupancy beginning in fall 2013, according to an Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis news release.

The decision to transform the conference center and hotel into specific campus use came after campus and IU officials spent nearly a year studying the Downtown facility's viability.
