Three times last year, the Cyclones topped the Hawkeyes in major athletic competitions.
Now Iowa State University is poised to inch past the University of Iowa in another important category: enrollment.
This fall could mark the first time since 1979 that more undergraduate and graduate students attend Iowa State than Iowa, officials say. If that happens, it would be just the fifth time since 1868 that ISU has surpassed Iowa in enrollment, records show.
ISU’s enrollment has surged more quickly than anticipated. Officials at the Ames university expected enrollment to surge past the 30,000-student mark for the first time ever; now, however, 31,000 students are predicted to attend the school.
