An annual student-run celebration on the Iowa State University campus turned violent overnight as a crowd rioted and overturned cars, leading to one serious injury when a man was struck by a light pole that was torn down, authorities said.
By 2:30 a.m., the situation was under control, but police will have some "serious discussions" on what the overnight riot will mean for police staffing for the rest of Veishea week, Ames Police Cmdr. Geoff Huff said early Wednesday.
Hundreds of people were massed just after midnight at Stanton and Chamberlain avenues, just south of the Iowa State University campus. The situation started to get out of control when two large gatherings in Campustown combined and grew into "a bigger problem," Huff said.
