Iowa State pursues $50 million dormitory

Iowa State University wants to build a residence hall next to Buchanan Hall that would house 700 students, Iowa Board of Regents documents show.

In Iowa City, meanwhile, construction continues on the first University of Iowa dorm in more than four decades. The West Campus Residence Hall, a $53 million project, will have room for 500 students when it opens in fall 2015.

The U of I and ISU have strained to meet the housing demands of an increasing number of students in recent years. Officials at both campuses said they’re building new residence halls because booming enrollment has forced them to spend millions to lease off-campus apartment buildings.
