Instead of ranking colleges, match them to students

The comments by Julia Carpenter-Hubin, assistant vice president for institutional research, regarding President Barack Obama’s proposed college rating system, were among thousands of pages of documents released by the government, which had sought input.

Obama’s system is focused on access, affordability and outcomes.

The president envisions using metrics including average tuition and loan debt, graduation and transfer rates, graduate earnings and the number of graduates who obtain advanced degrees.

The ratings could determine how much federal financial aid is awarded to institutions.
