If Obama is serious about ranking colleges, here's what he should do

In his recent visit to Upstate New York, President Obama announced his intention to use the power of federal money to change the way colleges and universities do business. He wants to reign in the cost of higher education and encourage stronger educational outcomes that better prepare graduates for the job market.

In short, he wants to move from Corporate U to Student U. Corporate U is marked by lavish administrative salaries, rich expense budgets, plush athletics palaces, and a huge student affairs bureaucracy that provides every comfort of home. Student U would focus almost exclusively on progress in the classroom.

Such a change is long overdue.
