Hikaru Kozuma has been named Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs in the Vice Provost for University Life (VPUL) Division at Penn. The announcement was made by Vice Provost for University Life Dr. Valarie Swain-Cade McCoullum.
Mr. Kozuma, known as Karu, has served as Interim Associate Vice Provost since July, 2012. Since 2010, he has been Executive Director of the Office of Student Affairs (Almanac September 14, 2010), where he nurtures VPUL administrative support for 400 student groups including the Undergraduate Assembly and the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly.
“I am delighted to welcome Karu to this expanded role in partnering Penn undergraduate, graduate and professional students’ interests and aspirations,” said Dr. McCoullum. “He has been an extraordinary asset to our community, and he now has the opportunity for additional important contributions to University life.”

The Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs (AVPSA) serves as the Vice Provost’s chief deputy in all matters involving undergraduate, graduate and professional student affairs, activities and programming. The AVPSA is a liaison with student affairs officers in all 12 Schools of the University, as well as College House Deans. He also serves as the Vice Provost’s formal deputy for Open Expression and on the University Crisis Team.
In his new position, Mr. Kozuma will have direct oversight of the following departments: Alcohol and Other Drug Program Initiatives, Civic House, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center, Student Intervention Services, the Office of Student Affairs, the Office of Student Affairs/Fraternity Sorority Life, University Life Arts Initiatives and the Penn Women’s Center.
