In an effort to promote a college-going culture, higher education officials have designated May 4 as Generation Texas Day.
Students, elected officials, business leaders and others are being urged to wear their favorite college T-shirt that day. Some high schools will have pep rallies, and a number of mayors will issue official proclamations.
GenTX, as the program is known, is a project of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Only 56 percent of Texas high school graduates enrolled in higher education in 2010, compared with the national average of 70 percent, according to a GenTX news release.
